A reflective EQ framework for leaders who want to respond with understanding – not assumption.

Before you form a strong opinion about someone on your team, pause. Misjudging behavior is easy. But real leadership begins when you get curious, not conclusive.

This quick 5-question filter helps you separate facts from projections, and it only takes a few moments to use in 1:1s, performance reviews, or tough conversations.


🔍 The 5 Questions of The Projection Pause

1. What was the actual outcome?
Don’t interpret – observe. What specifically did they do or not do? Strip away tone, delay, or delivery and get down to behavior and results.

2. Did I clearly define success?
Ask yourself: Were expectations shared? Did they know the “why,” not just the “what”? Many so-called performance issues are really clarity issues.

3. What might they be experiencing that I don’t see?
Is there unseen stress? Ambiguity? A shift in role or priorities? A difficult home situation? Before you label behavior, explore unseen factors.

4. Are my expectations aligned with their current skills and goals?
Check for projection. Are you judging them by your standards? Your pace? Your preferences? Good leadership meets people where they are – not where you are.

5. How can I ask, not assume?
Instead of jumping to conclusions, try this:
"Hey, I noticed [X]. Can you walk me through how you approached it?"
This single question creates space for honesty, context, and mutual understanding.
